Mountain Craft

KMS Mountaincraft is all about having the ability to look after yourself in wilderness areas of the UK. Elements of mountaincraft include navigation skills, weather forecasting, campcraft, river crossing, security on steep ground and emergency proceedures.

At KMS we teach all of our Summer and Winter Mountaincraft courses to MLTUK (Mountain Leader Training UK) standard. On completion you will be able to navigate safely in all conditions - day or night. You'll be able to interpret weather maps so you won't get caught out unexpectedly and deal with river crossings or steep ground when you come across them. Learn how to choose the best location for your overnight camp and deal with emergency situations if they arise.

In Winter you'll discover how to interpret snow conditions underfoot, learn the secrets of predicting and avoiding avalanche prone areas, and how to make yourself a snowhole in emergencies. You'll also learn the essentials of ice axe and crampon techniques and snow and ice belays. After a course with us you'll know how to deal with getting down safely off the mountains when the weather closes in, and navigate in zero visibility.

Above all we'll teach you how to have the confidence to cope with all that the British weather can throw at you. Using well practised techniques you'll be able to venture into the wilderness safe and secure in the knowledge that you will know what to do at all times - and all thanks to the expert guidance of highly qualified KMS instructors.

Typically, our mountaincraft courses are run over five days or we can arrange a modular course to suit your needs. Mountaincraft courses are run in North Wales, The Lake District or the Scottish Highlands. Contact us for details.
