Navigation

Navigation is probably the most important skill you need to learn before venturing into the hills.

With a KMS Navigation Course you will learn map reading skills to MLTUK (Mountain Leader Training UK) standard.

You'll start off by learning what all of those symbols mean - how to identify land features through contours, streams, footpaths etc, then we'll move you on to setting the map in order that you can relate what you see on the map to what is around you.

You'll learn about the various map scales in order that you can measure distance on the map and how to measure the disance on the ground by pacing, then you will move on to working out timings using Naithsmiths rule.

An integral part of navigation looks at using a compass to take bearings so that you can navigate, essential for poor visibility, and in order to do that you'll also be shown how to take a grid reference. Other examples of navigation will see you using linear features and attack points to get to your destination.

As well as having the ability to navigate during daylight - well, what happens if you are caught out after dark? You can choose to add a night navigation session to your course as a progression which may well save your life.

KMS Navigation Courses can be run on a per day modular basis but a typical course will last a minimum of two days in order to get you started and competent. You can add on more days in order to learn more complicated navigation techniques as you wish. Contact us for deatils
