The Cuillin Ridge Traverse, Isle of Skye

Adventurous Outdoor Activity With Kendal Mountaineering ServicesKendal Mountaineering Services runs an annual Cuillin Ridge Traverse every May in conjunction with Classic Cuillin Scrambling courses and rock climbing courses based on the Isle of Skye.

The traverse of the Cuillin Ridge is approximately 13 km in length plus 7km of approach & descent. Once on the ridge one never drops below 726M and there are some 20 peaks rising above 914M (3000ft) of which 11 are classed as Munros. Traversing the ridge involves considerable effort and exposure so this is no place for a hillwalker, ideally you should have attended a scrambling course prior to making the traverse as there is a considerable amount of technical scrambling, also abseiling and rock climbing up to severe grade. Highlights of the ridge include the crossing of the famous Thearlaich Dubh Gap, an ascent and abseil descent of the Inaccessable Pinnacle and a traverse of the Am Bastier Tooth, however, all of these can be bypassed if time or ability dictates otherwise

So, before considering this exhilarating challenge you must be fit and able to carry a fairly heavy rucsack containing all that you would need for a mountaineering day including a helmet, harness and some climbing equipment and you need to have a head for heights!

KMS have operated successful traverses of the Cuillin ridge since 2006 and operate week long courses from Carbost on the west coast of the Isle of Skye which is very close to the main climbing and scrambling of the Black Cuillin Ridge.

The traverse can be tackled in a number of ways depending on your choice - a two day traverse involving an overnight bivouac on the ridge or 3 separate day excursions making for long days but at least you get to spend your nights in comfort! the proximity of our base makes this possible.

Having completed a traverse of the ridge you may decide to have a rest day and explore all that the Isle of Skye has to offer. Following on from that you may want to have some guided scrambling days on some Cuillin Classics such as Pinnacle Ridge on Sgurr Nan Gillean, the Dubhs Ridge from Loch Coruisk or the Spur on Sgurr an Fheadain. Alternatively, you may decide to do some guided climbing days taking in for example Naismiths Route up the Am Basteir Tooth or climb the Cioch face by such multi-pitch classics as Cioch Direct and Integrity to top out on Sron Na Ciche.

Privately guided traverses of the ridge are available (3 people maximum) or you can choose to join the annual traverse trip at our self catering venue in Carbost. A minimum of six people are required for this week to run. If you are interested in any of the above options on Skye contact us for details and view our prices. Click here for the Skye Gallery.
