Kendal Mountaineering Services' mountain craft courses are run primarily in the Lake District National Park however, we also run them in Snowdonia National Park in North Wales. Winter mountain craft courses are run in Scotland.
Our mountain craft courses teach you to be self sufficient in wilderness areas. You will be taught mountain navigation techniques, wild camping etiquette, river crossing techniques, security on steep ground, emergency procedures and also about how mountains influence weather forecasting.
At KMS we teach all of our Summer and Winter Mountain craft courses to MLTUK (Mountain Leader Training UK) standard. On completion you will be able to navigate safely in all conditions - day or night. You'll be able to interpret weather maps so you won't get caught out unexpectedly and deal with river crossings or steep ground when you come across them. Learn how to choose the best location for your overnight camp and deal with emergency situations if they arise.
Winter mountain craft courses are run in the Cairngorms in Scotland. The Cairngorm National Park contains the UK's largest area of ground above 800m (2600 feet) and also contains 4 of the UK's 5 highest summits. Here you'll discover how to interpret snow conditions underfoot, learn the secrets of predicting and avoiding avalanche prone areas, and how to make yourself a snowhole in emergencies. You'll also learn the essentials of ice axe and crampon techniques and snow and ice belays. After a course with us you'll know how to deal with getting down safely off the mountains when the weather closes in, and navigate in zero visibility.
Above all we'll teach you how to have the confidence to cope with all that the British weather can throw at you. Using well practised techniques you'll be able to venture into the wilderness safe and secure in the knowledge that you will know what to do at all times - and all thanks to the expert guidance of highly qualified KMS instructors.
Mountaincraft courses can be run on a modular basis, you can choose to cover aspects of the syllabus over as many days as you wish or you can book on to a full 5 day course which covers everything.
