Winter Skills
KMS has a proven track record in providing value for money experiences in Scotland's winter mountain environment. We tend to favour the Cairngorms as a venue due to the reliability of full winter conditions there - but if you want a course run in the Western Highlands remember - we run bespoke modular courses to suit your needs.
Typical courses include the following :-
A two day basic winter skills course covering ice axe braking, all aspects of snow belays, using the boot as a tool, step cutting/kicking, crampon usage, moving on steep ground and snow shelters. All in all, the basics to give you everything you need to get out with confidence and make the most of that winter weather in the mountains.
Having attended a basic winter skills course you'll probably then want to move on to something more challenging - how about some climbing? Climbing days can be either tacked on to an existing course or run separately - although prior basic winter experience is a pre-requisite. You can do as many or as few days as you like. Our qualified instructors will teach you how to climb grade one to grade three routes including the technical skills required to climb steep ice, place appropriate protection and belay others up that pitch that you have just climbed!
If you don't fancy climbing but want some long days out on the hills how about an expedition with qualified KMS staff? Head into remote areas and learn navigation winter style, take in some Munros along the way and spend a night in a snow hole - once you have experienced this you'll realise how unfounded the rumours are about how uncomfortable snow holing is. Again, expedition length depends on you and what you want to do.
